Lacrosse

This year James tried his hand at Lacrosse...and he liked it. And he is pretty good.

We started the season knowing NOTHING about the sport. Ok...so, we knew you could run with the ball, throw the ball, and players used a pretty funky-looking stick, but we didn't know a thing about the rules of play. While James understands most of it now, his mom is still very confused. One day I asked him why sometimes you can check (hit) someone and it's ok, yet other times a referee will blow his whistle. James explained that it depends on several things, such as where the player hit the other player, whether or not two hands were on the stick, and even if the hands on the stick were more than 6 inches apart. After watching a few more games I got brave and asked James if when the goalie has possession of the ball and was in the crease, other players could not touch him, but the minute the goalie stepped out of the crease he was free game. James told me that was correct, and I felt pretty dang smart.

May 3, 2008, Pocatello, ID (#15)

Most of the games were played locally, but the teams from Pocatello, ID were also in our league, so we made two separate trips up there. I do have to say I prefer driving Idaho roads in the spring for lacrosse games, opposed to driving Idaho roads in the winter for hockey games. There much less snow. :D

Throughout the season James played every position except goalie. He started out on defense and clearly showed what he had learned strategy wise playing hockey defense. After a couple of weeks of defense, he tried middie for awhile. Middie is short for midfielder, and the middies cover the entire field, and get very tired, very quick. During the last couple of games he played "attack" on the end of the field close to the opposing goal. He said when playing attack he's supposed to keep the other team away from the middies so they have an easier time getting a goal. Overall his favorite position was middie, I'm thinking it's because it's the one that saw the most action.

At the last game of the year we found out one of James' hockey friends, Patrick, was on the Weber team. Patrick's mom then pointed out that another Jr. Wildcat played with Patrick, and that another one was on James' team. Small world!
